My son's 11 now. Throughout the years, there were teachers he liked and teachers he didn't particularly care for.

I always ask why. I want to encourage him to understand himself better, and I also want to know more.

The teachers he likes and respects are the ones who do exactly what you described here.

Thank you for this comment Debbie! I also observed the same thing when my kids were at school. My daughter, once an avid reader, suddenly stopped reading until she met her literature teacher at grade 9 and then at university she studied comparative literature.

Spot on Eva! It is the mechanism that makes a lesson land. Build the best curriculum in the world and a kid who feels invisible in your room will not absorb one word of it.
